11-3 Box MVC involving... a turtle?

By Board of Director Michael Matula
May 21, 2007

At 1905 hours Sunday night, Engine 112 and Ambulance 119 responded to a motor vehicle collision on northbound Ft. Smallwood Road just south of Kembo Road with one vehicle reported to be in the woods... Upon arrival, crews found two vehicles involved and despite the mangled appearance of the vehicles, all occupants were fortunately found to be ok.
Upon further investigation, crews found out that the whole incident occurred when the motorist of the first vehicle stopped to aid a (rather sizable) turtle to complete its crossing of Ft. Smallwood road. As the motorist was stopped, a second vehicle coming northbound (from behind) came upon the scene rather quickly and needed to brake and swerve to avoid the turtle. The second car plowed into the vehicle of the helpful citizen. The incident turned out to be property damage only with the second car possibly totalled.
The turtle, however, came away unscathed!

The members at Orchard Beach would like remind you to exercise EXTREME caution if aiding wildlife and would discourage taking matters into your own hands if on a heavily trafficked, high velocity highway such as Ft. Smallwood Rd.

We would ALSO like to point out that slow and steady wins the race! The turtle was the only one involved that came away unscathed...
