The driver of a cement mixer suffered serious injuries in an auto accident in Lake Shore Thursday afternoon. Firefighters responded to the intersection of Forest Glen Drive and West Drive just before 2:20 p.m. for a reported vehicle collision with a cement truck overturned. First arriving responders located a single vehicle accident with cement mixer on its side against a utility pole. The passenger cab severely damaged by the impact with the pole. The driver, a 64-year-old male, was heavily entrapped and pinned inside the cab. Additional fire department resources were requested to the scene, including members of the Special Operations Team. Additionally, MyBGE was requested to the scene to shut off the electricity and assist in securing the utility pole, and two 50-ton rotator heavy duty tow trucks from Morton's Towing & Recovery Inc came to the scene to assist with stabilization and lifting of the truck.
Paramedics also requested a Maryland State Police - Aviation Command medevac helicopter. As firefighters recognized it would be a prolonged operation to free the driver, the helicopter was diverted to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center to pick up R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center GO-TEAM. The GO-TEAM is a physician-led team that can be requested when a patient has suspected life-threatening injuries and extrication times are expected to exceed one hour.
The helicopter landed at Bodkin Elementary, and the GO-TEAM was transported to the scene of the incident to assist paramedics. The patient was extricated just before 4:30 and transported to the waiting helicopter for the flight to Shock Trauma. The patient was flown to Shock Trauma with injuries that were serious, but not believed life threatening.
